Premature Ejaculation (PE) is a common sexual problem that almost every man faces some time in their life. Premature Ejaculation is defined as the difficulty in holding the semen and releasing it shortly after sexual penetration, often before the individual desires. There is no specific cut-out time to ejaculate however, as per International Society for Sexual Medicine, if ejaculation is happening within a minute immediately after penetration, then it is called premature ejaculation. There is no need to worry, if that happens once in a while however, it can’t go unattended if becomes a regular thing. The persistency of this problem can significantly impact the quality of a man's life and intimate relationships with their partner.

In this comprehensive article, we will discuss how to self-diagnose premature ejaculation, when to see a doctor, symptoms and causes of premature ejaculation.

Symptoms of Premature Ejaculation:

One of the primary symptoms of premature ejaculation is the inability to delay the ejaculation within a minute of sexual penetration. This may happen during the masturbation also.

There are two types of premature ejaculation:

  1. Lifelong: It is a condition that you are experiencing always or almost since your first sexual intercourse experience.
  2. Acquired: It is a condition that you have developed after a few sexual intercourses without any problem of ejaculation previously.

Causes of Premature Ejaculation:

It is difficult to say the exact causes of premature ejaculation in any individual as they vary from person to person however, experienced medical practitioner will be able to help you in diagnosing and treating the problem. There are several factors that can contribute to premature ejaculation, and it's often a combination of psychological and biological factors. Some of the common causes of PE are:

1. Psychological Factors: Anxiety, stress, performance pressure, and relationship issues can lead to premature ejaculation. Fear of failure or past traumatic sexual experiences, poor body image, depression, guilt may also play a role in rushing through sex. In most of the cases, this is the main cause of premature ejaculation as it slows down the ability to relax and divert the focus during sex.

2. Biological Factors: Certain medical conditions such as hormonal imbalances, abnormal reflex activity of the ejaculatory system, thyroid problems, irregular levels of brain chemicals and inflammation of the prostate or urethra can also lead to premature ejaculation.

3. Genetic Factors: There might be a genetic predisposition to premature ejaculation, and some men may be more prone to it due to hereditary factors. These can be easily diagnosed by examining the family medical history however, may take time to heal.

4. Erectile Dysfunction: Men with erectile dysfunction may develop a tendency to early ejaculate before losing their erection. This leads to premature ejaculation.

5. Behavioural Factors: Sometimes frequent or aggressive masturbation also trains the body to ejaculate soon. Absence of sex for a long period of time may result in early ejaculation when sexual encounters happen.

6. Medical Condition or Poor Lifestyle: Some medical treatments affecting nervous system, excessive smoking, alcohol or drugs intake may affect the ejaculatory controls. Lack of physical activity or poor physical health also contribute to premature ejaculation.

7. Age Factor: This is one of the important factors in PE as younger men tend to have early ejaculation and improve with age.

Since premature ejaculation could be a combination of any of these factors so, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider or sex therapist to identify those factors and recommend proper treatment.
